A poem from 2012: We SHALL rise
(Author's note: I wrote this in a creative writing class. My writing style was more thoughts than complete sentences. Again, I made no corrections to show my flaws. Hope this doesn't hurt your eyes that much for all my super scholarly people.)
The pitfall of life with shattered eyes
Consumed by political lies and false pretenses of the world
Corruption depicted by controversial media
Allowing the simplicity of ignorant minds to rule the lives and thoughts of us
No matter how hard our people have fought for us
We are stuck in the deep hollows of the caved soul
Still being judged by our skin from our own
The racial oppression has been imbedded in our hearts
Tied into our thoughts and rooted into our lives
Flowing backwards into the irony of us living these quote unquote lavished lifestyles
When we are just cheating ourselves
Allowing mainstream media to rip us apart and reform us to their own image
Each time the scalpel grazes one of our bodies we allow them to take a piece of us with them
Butt injections making younger girls ashamed of the temple in which they have been blessed
Suppressed, Repressed, and Oppressed
They call us hopeless
Hopeless is the insidious acts that have come to harm us of over centuries
We rise and fall
With Progress we then digress nine times backwards
With no hope
Where is our pride and self -assurance?
We are not comfortable in our skin because of the seeds of deception that has ultimately been planted in our roots
We don’t know the truth
Only knowing hoop dreams,
Aspiring nursing occupations, beauty school, and the entertainment industry
We are afraid of aiming for higher education
This has the world laughing at us instead of with us
Not knowing the possibilities of what ultimate success can mean
Evolving from the roles of the mammy to reversed psychological inferiority only to be reverting back to the knew aged coon
In all honesty, they laugh at our ignorance and the lack of knowledge of
What we are and who we are
BUT WE ARE PEOPLE
In our own skin unaware of what we can accomplish
